About Grace

Created by Matthew 12 years ago
On the day she was born, the hospital staff asked if we had thought of any names for our new baby. Unplanned (well, she was three months early), Emily and I looked at each other and said at the same time, "Grace!" After three months we were allowed to take baby Grace home. We learned to love and care for her, but also to look after her medically. During that first year, a number of medical problems were diagnosed, but Grace seemed to take them in her stride, and so we followed her lead. Grace spent a large proportion of that first year seriously ill in hospital, but she grew into a very happy, loving and giving little girl. After her first period in intensive care, she surprised us all by moving from a life support machine straight to her normal oxygen support, two little plastic prongs in her nose attached to whatever oxygen she needed. I think it was at the end of her second period that we discovered she had cut her first tooth on the breathing tube in her mouth. After that first year, Grace grew stronger and her personality really started to shine through. Despite everything she went through, Grace was determined to make the best of life. I lost count of the times she giggled after suffering some painful muscle spasms. She couldn't talk, but we learned to read her face and her vocalisations and put words to her expression. Grace loved cuddles. She loved having her tummy tapped. She loved clapping. She loved being talked to. She loved having her hair and her chin stroked. She loved life. After quite a short illness by her standards, God invited Grace to come home to Heaven to be with Jesus. I had the privilege of being present when she accepted his invitation. She showed us that was what she wanted, and so we let her go on Thursday 24th March, at about 6 in the evening. Again, I felt privileged as I held her in my arms for her last moments here on earth. Grace affected everyone that met her. In her own quiet way she had a very powerful personality. I don't believe anyone that met her will ever forget her. She was a living testimony to the goodness and Grace of God. Goodnight, little angel, it really has been a pleasure to entertain you for the past four years.
